Characteristics

A monoecious or sometimes dioecious many-stemmed small or large tree up to 10 m. tall.. Young twigs sparingly stellate-pubescent, soon glabrescent.. Older twigs pale grey or brownish, conspicuously lenticellate.. Bark rough.. Petioles 1–4.5 cm. long, sparingly stellate-pubescent at first, later becoming glabrous; leaf-blade elliptic-ovate, ovate or broadly triangular-ovate, 4–14 cm. long, 3–10 cm. wide, obtusely acuminate to roundly obtuse and emarginate, rounded-truncate or very shallowly cordate, with  2 sessile or sometimes subsessile or shortly stipitate discoid basal glands not visible from above, somewhat coarsely crenate or crenate-serrate, chartaceous, 5–7-nerved from the base, remaining lateral nerves 3–5(–8) pairs, slightly prominent beneath, sparingly stellate-pubescent above and beneath at first, later becoming quite glabrous.. Stipules linear-oblong, 1–2 mm. long, ± glabrous, soon caducous.. Racemes terminal, 8–20 cm. long, either all ♂, or mostly ♂ with 1–2 ♀ flowers at the base, or the lower quarter–third ♀ and the upper two-thirds–three-quarters ♂; axis evenly stellate-pubescent; bracts linear, 2 mm. long, sparingly stellate-pubescent or subglabrous, soon caducous.. Male flowers: pedicels 3–7 mm. long, sparingly stellate-pubescent; sepals 5(–6), ovate, 2.5 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, subacute, subglabrous without, glabrous within, densely white villous on the margins; petals 5, oblong, 3 mm. long, 1.25 mm. wide, subacute or acute, glabrous without and within, villous on the margin especially towards the apex, white; disc-glands free, rounded; stamens 16–18, filaments 3 mm. long, glabrous, anthers 0.8 mm. long; receptacle densely pilose.. Female flowers: pedicels 2–4 mm. long, stouter than the ♂ pedicels, extending to 7–10 mm. in fruit, densely stellate-pubescent; sepals 5, triangular, 3 mm. long, 2 mm. wide at the base, acute, sparingly stellate-pubescent without, puberulous within towards the apex, ciliate on the margin; petals 3–5, filiform, 1–2 mm. long, subglabrous; disc-glands as in the ♂; ovary subglobose-subtrilobed, 3 mm. diameter, densely fulvous stellate-tomentose; styles 3, spreading, 3.5 mm. long, completely glabrous, deeply bipartite, the lobes tape-like, entire or shortly 3-fid at the apex.. Fruits ovoid-subglobose to subtrilobed, 2.6–2.8 cm. long, 2.2–2.5 cm. wide, tardily loculicidal, sparingly to evenly adpressed stellate-pubescent.. Seeds compressed-ellipsoid, 2 cm. long, 1.1 cm. wide, brown, dull, with a whitish caruncle 5 mm. wide.. Fig. 26.
