Species

Angiosperms > Laurales > Lauraceae > Cryptocarya

Characteristics

Medium to large evergreen tree (8)10-35(50) m high, sometimes flowering as a shrub c. 5 m high; stem buttressed; crown ± rounded; bark brown to grey-brown, smooth with shallow longitudinal fissures and flaking in small patches; slash brown, fine-grained. Young branches and apical buds densely rusty-tomentellous, soon glabrescent, older twigs with smooth or longitudinally lenticellate grey bark. Leaves leathery; petiole 5-12 mm long, slightly channelled above, glabrous; lamina (3)4-10(11) x (1.7)2-4.5(6.5) cm, broadly ovate or ovate-elliptic, obtuse to rounded and ± emarginate at the apex, rarely obtusely and shortly acuminate, broadly cuneate at the base, ± undulate on the margin; at first rusty-tomentellous, particularly on the nerves, soon glabrescent on both surfaces, except sometimes along the midrib and the nerves beneath; lateral nerves in 4-5 pairs, the lowest nerves opposite or sub-opposite arising above the leaf base, obliquely to the midrib and remote from the next nerves, reticulation obscure; upper surface glossy dark green, with midrib slightly impressed; lower surface greenish or cinnamon-brown, becoming bluish-green with prominent midrib and nerves, reticulation very dense, obscure. Cymes paniculately arranged, few-flowered, axillary; rhachis 1.5-5 cm long, usually fulvo-tomentellous; peduncle 0.5-2.5 cm long; bracts lanceolate, minute, caducous. Flowers white to cream-coloured, small, cinnamon-tomentellous; pedicels up to 1 mm long; receptacle 1-1.5 mm long, cylindric-urceolate, constricted near the apex, tomentellous outside and inside; tepals erect-patent, 2-2.5 mm long, elliptic, acute and incurved at apex, tomentellous outside and inside. Fertile stamens 9 in 3 whorls, with a fourth (innermost) whorl of staminodes; filaments of outer whorl tomentellous, shorter than the tepals, anthers c. 1 mm long, acute at the apex; filaments of inner whorls similar but shorter, glands c. 0.5 mm in diameter, globose with a pilose stalk; staminodes c. 1 mm long with short pilose filaments and ovate-lanceolate acute glabrous antherodes. Ovary up to 1 mm long, ovoid, glabrous; style short, stigma capitate. Fruit 1.3-1.8 cm in diameter, globose or nearly so, black and somewhat fleshy outside; mature ovary enveloped by the accrescent receptacle; fruiting pedicel thick, 2-4 mm long.
