Characteristics

Leaves coriaceous, green above, glaucescent beneath; petiole 4–10 mm long, channelled above, puberulous, soon glabrous; lamina (3)6–10(12) x (1.5)3–4.5 cm, narrowly elliptic, rarely oblong, acute?acuminate or shortly cuspidate-acuminate with an obtuse tip, ± broadly cuneate or rounded at the base, undulate on the margins; lateral nerves 4–7, ± alternate on each side of the midrib, the lowermost sometimes oblique, opposite or subopposite, ascending and arching near the margin; upper surface glossy, dark green, glabrous, with midrib and lateral nerves impressed; lower surface dull bluish-green, glabrous except on the midrib when young, midrib prominent and lateral nerves slightly raised; tertiary venation hardly visible, reticulate, slightly raised.

Flowers greenish-yellow, 2.5–3.5 mm long; pedicels up to 2 mm long; receptacle 1.0–1.5 mm long, urceolate-cylindric, sparsely and minutely appressed-pubescent outside, densely pubescent inside; tepals erect, 1–2 mm long, elliptic or ovate-elliptic, obtuse-acute at the apex, ± appressed-pubescent outside and inside.
Fertile stamens included; filaments short, the inner ones slightly shorter than the others, all pilose; anthers c. 0.6 mm long, ovate, connective conspicuously pointed, glabrous; glands c. 0.5 mm in diameter, subglobose; staminodes c. 1 mm long with short pilose filaments and ovate, acute antherodes.
Cymes paniculately arranged, densely many-flowered, axillary, borne mostly towards the ends of the branches; rhachis 1–7.5 cm long, sparsely and minutely appressed-pubescent; peduncle 1–2 cm long.
Fruit 1.3–1.5 cm in diameter when ripe, subglobose, mature ovary enveloped by the fleshy, plum-red to purple accrescent receptacle, glabrous; pericarp thin.
An evergreen tree 6–15(25) m high; trunk up to 25 cm in diameter; crown rounded; bark thin, ± smooth, dull dark brown or grey; slash brown.
Apical buds ferruginous-tomentose, soon glabrescent; branchlets ± angular, puberulous; older twigs terete, glabrous.
Ovary c. 1 mm long, ellipsoid, glabrous; style 1.0–1.5 mm long; stigma minutely capitate.
