Characteristics

Evergreen shrub, 2-10(20) m high; branches with lenticels becoming verruculose. Leaves alternate, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, glabrous; petioles 3-5 mm long. Inflorescences axillary cymes, paniculately arranged, few-flowered; peduncle slender. Flowers ± 3 mm long, greenish white to yellowish. Tepals ovate-elliptic. Stamens 9, fertile, in 3 whorls; staminodes of whorl four with pilose filaments and ovate, acute antherodes. Ovary ovoid, glabrous; stigma capitate. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Fruit subglobose enveloped by receptacle, dark purplish black, pedicel slender.

Flowers c. 3 mm long, greenish-white to yellowish, pedicels 1–5 mm long, slender; receptacle 1–1.5 mm long, subcylindric, enlarged near the apex, sparsely appressed tomentellous outside, glabrous inside; tepals erect-patent, 1–1.5 mm long, ovate-elliptic, acute and incurved at the apex.

Fruit 1.5–2 cm in diameter when ripe, subglobose, mature ovary enveloped by the dark purplish-black receptacle; fruiting pedicel slender.
