Herb up to 75 cm., with grey-white fleshy roots covering the rhizome.. Leaves somewhat distichous, often twisted in upper part, 1.5–3.5 cm. broad.. Scape compressed, with a narrow wing.. Inflorescence with up to 100 dark purplish to almost black flowers, subtended by many bracts of unequal size.. Pedicel 1–2.5 cm. long.. Perianth-tube narrowly funnel-shaped, 1–2 cm.; segments somewhat spreading, acute, up to 1.2 cm. long and 5 mm. broad, terminating in a hood of glandular hairs; corona-scales linear, yellow.. Filaments only a few mm., greenish white; anthers pale yellow.. Style exserted.. Berry red with a yellowish spot.. Fig. 2.
