Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Cullen

Characteristics

Ascending-erect to erect perennial herbs to 0.75 m tall, the ephemeral stems arising one to many from the branched crown of a deep woody root, a true caudex not forming; the plant faintly blond-glandular on lower leaflet surface, tomentose to sericeous throughout, but less so on the lower surface of the bicoloured leaflets, and the ribbed stems becoming less so with age. Stipules linear-triangular, 7-11 x 0.75-1.5 mm, (3-)5-7-nerved, erect, persistent. Leaves homoblastic, pinnately trifoliolate, the leaf-stalk ribbed and abaxially canaliculate from an enlarged, somewhat laterally alate, but otherwise undifferentiated pulvinus, the petiole of leaves subtending inflorescences in flower 11-36 mm (of mature leaves at sterile nodes up to 48 mm) long, the leaf-rachis 1-6 mm long, the smooth, blond and more densely pubescent pulvinules 1.5-3 mm long; leaflets ovate or obovate, the larger terminal one 13-39 x 6-28 mm, the base broadly cuneate, the apex apiculate; veins three from pulvinule, thence pinnate, deeply impressed on upper surface, prominulous or obscure on the darker green lower one, at least the distal-most proceeding to the coarsely dentate margins as small apiculate teeth. Unit-inflorescences one per node, when first in bloom with 18-54 nodes, elongating through fruiting, precocious with respect to subtending leaf and long surpassing it; peduncles in flower 7.9-12.5 cm; rachis 7.0-10.3 cm, the internodes in flower almost 0 or to15 mm long; bracts linear-elliptic to-lanceolate, 3.25-5.0 x 0.5-1.25 mm, erect, deciduous by anthesis; pedicel 0.5-1.25 mm. Flower 6-6.5 mm. Calyx tubular-campanulate 3.5-5.0 mm long to the upper teeth, 5.0-6.5 mm long to the lower tooth, tube 1.5-2.5 mm, the teeth graduate, the lower one lance-ovate, 2.5-4.0 x 1.0-1.5 mm, very slightly distally carinate, the pedicel strongly reflexed in fruit and the whole calyx inflating but not flaring, becoming urceolate-campanulate, enclosing the fruit, this apparently persistent on the receptacle and dispersed in the calyx. Petals described as white, fading yellowish with purple veins; standard ovate to ovate-elliptic, 6.0-7.0 x 4.0-5.5 mm, the scarcely differentiated claw 1- long; wings 6-7 mm long, including a claw 2.0-2.5 mm long; keel 5.0-5.75 mm, including a claw 2.0-3.0 mm. Androecium gently reflexed, 4.0-5.0 mm. Ovary elliptic from a stipe ±0.5 mm long, the body glabrous at inception, but the style basally sericeous. Fruit(very few seen) reniform-elliptic, ± 4.5 mm long, 3 mm high, 2.25 mm wide, the body sericeous, basally moderately so, apically becoming very densely so, the epicarp smooth black-glandular, the base of the style persistent as a ventrally displaced minute beak.
