Characteristics

Frutex dense ramosus, fide collect, cr. 30-120 cm altus. Rami in partibus iunioribus levissime et inconspicue tomentosi, glabrescentes vel iam ab initio subglabri, usque ad capitula dense et aequaliter foliati internodiis 1.5-2 mm longis, in partibus vetustioribus cortice fuliginoso obtecti. Folia sessilia, breviter (cr. 1-2 mm) neque usque ad folium proximum decurrentia, ut rami non totaliter obtecti sint, subulata, rigida, recurva vel reclinata (rarissime vix recurva et subrecta), (7-)10-20(-25) mm longa, (1-)1.5(-2) mm lata, apice in spinam fulvam (1-)1.5-3 mm longam excurrentia, marginibus revolutis, in lateribus utrinque cr. 5-7 spinis ± in iugis dispositis ei in apice similibus solitariis uniseriatis 1.5-3(-4) mm longis obsita (dimidio vel triente apicali excepto), rarissime praeterea basin versus in margine ipsa singulis spinis minoribus obsita, supra glabra, subtus in duobus sulcis e marginibus revolutis et nervo mediano prominenti glabro formatis tomentosa. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria, ligulis expansis 2.5-3.5 cm diam. Involucri pars connate cr. 2-4 mm alta, cr. 4-5 mm lata, levissime tomentosa vel subglabra; squamae imbrieatae et partem eonnatam totaliter obtegentes, glabrae, stramineae vel fulvae, extus violacei-bistriatae, laneeolatae, spinosi-acuminatae, foliis satis dissimiles (quamquam extimae in ea transgredientes); extimae cr. 3-5 mm longae, cr. 0.8-1.5 mm latae, leviter coneavae, margine spinosi-eiliatae, sequentes sensim maiores et denique (8-)10-12 mm longae, 2-3 mm latae (paueis intimis rursum minoribus exeeptis), planiores, margine brevissime dentieulatae. Achaenia laevia glaberrima.
