Characteristics

Leaves many, stiffly erect; outer leaves (cataphylls) 2–10, sheathing at the base with broad hyaline margins, lamina usually absent or 6–12 cm long, ± densely pilose-pubescent outside in the upper part, ± lanate at the apex, glabrescent; inner leaves 2–6, with lamina 6–45 × 0.2–1.4(2.6) cm, linear-lanceolate, becoming linear-elliptic and arching outwards in mature leaves and tapering into a narrowed usually pilose pseudopetiole before widening into a sheathing base, ± plicate, sparsely thinly pilose to glabrescent, strongly nerved; indumentum of 3–many-armed (stellate) hairs.
More
Perianth tube (1.5)2.4–5.6(7) cm long, slender, ± densely pilose; perianth segments yellow, spreading, mostly 10–12 × 2.5–3.5 mm (but ranging from 5–20 mm long), narrowly elliptic; filaments 1.8–4 mm long; thecae 2.5–3.5 mm long.
A herb. It has tuber like rhizomes. It has a cluster of grass like leaves. These are 60 cm long. The flower shoots are 20 cm long. The capsule retracts down to the base of the plant.
Fruit indehiscent, enclosed within 2 bracts (6)12–20 mm long (or within leaf base remnants), 17–30 mm long, fusiform, with remains of the perianth tube at the apex.
Flowers 1–2, subsessile, each usually subtended by 2 bracts, the larger bract forming a spathe about the ovary, (or ovary subsessile on the rhizome in leaf axil).
Flowers golden yellow, towards the end of the dry season, together with the developing leaves which eventually reach a length of 2 ft.
Perennial herb 6–45 cm tall; rhizome vertical, 0.9–9.4 × 0.7–1.8 cm, cylindrical, with scattered contractile roots.
Seeds black and shiny, 1.8–3.4 mm in diameter, ellipsoid with a small recurved strophiole; testa striate or not.
Scapes 0–several, 0–1.5(6) cm long, flattened in cross-section, ± pilose.
