Characteristics

Stems slender.. Flowers in dense clusters, 8–10 mm. in diameter when in fruit.. Calyx-lobes abruptly acute, enveloping the corolla rather loosely.. Corolla 3–3.5 mm. long (only 2 mm. in some poorly developed flowers); lobes shorter than the corolla-tube, broadly triangular, abruptly acute.. Stamens shorter than the lobes.. Scales very thin, about half as long as the tube, often bifid, apically sparsely fringed.. Styles very short, half as long as the stigmas or less, together at first 0.5 mm. long, becoming about 1 mm.long.. Stigmas short, about 0.25 mm. thick.. Mature capsule depressed-globose, about 3 mm. in diameter, thin-walled.

Fls sessile in compact globose heads, all or mostly 5-merous; cal-lobes very broadly ovate, acute, about equaling the urceolate cor; stigma slender, appearing as a continuation of its style, the two together to about as long as the ovary, included in the eventually calyptrate cor; fr depressed-globose, 2–2.5 mm high and 2.5–3 mm thick, circumscissile near the base; seeds 4, ca 1.2 mm; 2n=42. Native of Europe, parasitic on flax and to be expected in this country wherever flax is grown.
