Herba annua a basi ramosa, cr. 5-30 cm alta; planta in collo capitulum induratum perforatum anni praecedentis gerens. Rami adscendentes, ± diffusi, glabri (ad summum primo leviter araneosi), foliati. Folia sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, membranacea, ambitu oblongi-obovata, imprimis inferiora basin versus angustata (interdum subpetiolata), (1-)2-4(-6) cm longa, 5-10(-20) mm lata supremis sub capitulis minoribus, apice acuta, in spinam cr. 1 mm longam excurrentia, margine plana, spinosi-dentata dentibus utrinque cr. 2-5 usque ad 3(-5) mm longis saepe cum minoribus geminatis in spinas cr. 1 mm longas excurrentibus, ceterum in tota margine spinulis cr. 0.2-0.5 mm longis ciliata, supra et subtus leviter araneosa, glabrescentia. Gapitula ligulis expansis 2-3(-4.5) cm diam. Involucrum leviter araneosum, glabrescens; pars connata cr. 3-4 mm alta, 6-8 mm lata; squamae extimae ad 3 spinas cr. 1-2 mm longas cr. 1 mm distantes inter se membrano brevissimo coniunctas reductae, sequentes triangulatae vel ovatae vel lanceolatae vel lineari-lanceolatae, 1-5 mm latae, sensim longiores usque ad 8-12 mm, intimae lineari-subulatae, minores, omnes acutae vel acuminatae, in spinam cr. 1 mm longam excurrentes, exteriores margine utrinque 1-2 spinis 1-3 mm longis ± basi approximatis obsitae, ceterum omnes tota margine spinulis minoribus ciliatae.

Annual herb, up to ± 0.15 m high; sprawling, thinly cobwebby. Leaves alternate, oblan-ceolate, spinose-toothed, pungent. Capitula radiate, several-flowered, solitary, terminal; involucre campanulate; bracts connate; outer bracts ovate to elliptic, becoming lignified, usually with 3 large, marginal spines, membranous, veined; inner bracts spiny, membranous, veined. Receptacle flat, honeycombed, with rim of pits produced into membranous cup enclosing ovary. Ray florets neuter; corolla yellow; lamina oblong, 4-toothed. Disc florets bisexual, fertile; corolla yellow; tube narrowly funnel-shaped, somewhat angled, glandular-hairy, with 5 linear lobes. Anthers sagittate at base, with lanceolate, apical appendage. Style terete, with linear, obtuse branches. Flowering time Apr.-Dec. Pappus of linear, ciliate-barbellate, subulate scales. Cypselae obovoid-obconical, sericeous. Seeds germinating within capitulum.

Leaves oblanceolate, 10-30 mm long, toothed and pungent, glabrescent or cobwebby. Flowerheads solitary at branch tips, radiate, 20-30 mm diam.; involucral bracts fused into a cup below, spreading above, leaf-like and pungent; ray florets pale yellow; disc florets yellow. Cypselas silky; pappus of barbellate scales.
