Characteristics

Perennial or biennial (?) herb, softly hairy, up to 0.45 m tall, including inflorescences. Stems branching from base, leafy. Leaves alternate; radical leaves long-petiolate, petiole up to 90 mm long, winged, often with copious, long, spreading, thin, white hairs, lamina narrowly elliptic, up to 100 x 21 mm; cauline leaves sessile, lamina elliptic in lower part of stem, lanceolate in upper part, clasping stem, diminishing in size towards inflorescences. Inflorescences terminal scorpioid cymes on short branches formed when stem terminally divides dichotomously, lengthening considerably in fruit. Flowers bisexual, ebracteate, pedicels slightly curved, alternate on flowering axis. Calyx persistent, accrescent with developing fruit, up to 5 mm long, deeply lobed, with a shallow tube, lobes more or less oblong with apices broadly obtuse to truncate, lobes usually glabrous on inside, covered with long thin hairs outside, reflexed in fruit. Corolla blue or white, 5-lobed, lobes spreading, imbricate, broadly ovate, 2.5-4.5 mm long, 4-5 mm broad; tube short, cylindrical, c. 2.5-3 mm long, fornices (crescent appendages) present in mouth of tube, 5, covered with papillae. Stamens 5, included; filaments very short; anthers oblong, obtuse, c. 1 mm long. Ovary distinctly 4-lobed, each lobe adhering to central stylar column by part of internal face only, 4-locular, with a single ovule in each locule; style gynobasic; stigma terminal. Fruit of 4 nutlets; nutlets densely echinulate with glochidia, depressed-ovoid, with outer surface convex.
