Cyphia erecta De Wild.

Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Campanulaceae > Cyphia

Characteristics

Erect or rarely somewhat twining herb, 8–80 cm. tall, from a subglobose tuber ± 2 cm. in diameter; stem not or sparsely branched, ribbed below, sulcate in the inflorescence region, glabrous or sparsely pubescent above, rarely whole plant pubescent.. Leaves sessile or shortly petiolate, up to 30–110 mm. long, 3–25 mm. wide, linear to broadly elliptic, acute or subacute at the apex, attenuate to cuneate at the base, serrate or serrate-crenate, glabrous or rarely shortly pubescent, mainly above; venation prominent beneath.. Raceme dense or lax, up to 25 cm. long, sometimes branched; pedicels 1–6 mm. long, very finely pubescent or papillose; bracts leaf-like, diminishing in size upwards; bracteoles 1–3(–7) mm. long, filiform to lanceolate, sometimes denticulate.. Hypanthium broadly obconical, 10-nerved, shortly pubescent to papillose or glabrous.. Calyx-lobes ± narrowly triangular, usually reflexed, 1.5–4.5 mm. long, with 1–3 pairs of teeth at the margin, glabrous.. Corolla 9–16(–20) mm. long, pale blue to mauve or purple, ± saccate at the base, split to the base into 2 lips, the upper 3-lobed but finally ± disintegrating, the lower divided into 2 free petals; all petals linear, glabrous or very rarely pubescent outside, white pubescent inside on the lower half or up to ± 2/3 of the length.. Stamens 4–7 mm. long; filaments linear, dilated and connate at the base, ± pubescent; anthers elliptic-oblong, 1.6–3.2 mm. long, lanate with curled hairs ± 1.5 mm. long on the back of the connective, and at the tip with a tuft of hairs, ± 0.5 mm. long, by which the anthers are apically united at least in young flowers.. Ovary semi-superior; style 2.5–5.5 mm. long.. Capsule ovoid to subglobose, inferior part 2.5–4 mm. long, with 10 distinct nerves with ± transverse connections, membranous parts almost or entirely lacking; valves 3.5–6 mm. long.. Seeds ± broadly elliptic in outline, ± compressed or irregularly angular, ± 1–1.5 mm. long, coarsely reticulate, brown.. Fig. 6.
