Characteristics

Corolla 11–21 mm. long, pink or purple, tubular with 5 subequal lobes, the 2 lower petals sometimes finally becoming ± free; all petals linear, glabrous outside, short pubescent inside along the sutures towards the base.

Stamens c. 4·5–5·5 mm. long; filaments linear, dilated and connate at the base, pubescent; anthers narrowly elliptic–oblong, c. 1·5 mm. long, glabrous or with a short tuft of hairs at the tip only.
Leaves sessile or subpetiolate, up to 35–70 x 1–10 mm., linear to linear–lanceolate, acute at the apex, attenuate at the base, glabrous; margin serrulate, ± revolute; midvein prominent beneath.
Raceme rather lax, up to 20 cm. long; pedicels 1–4 mm. long, very finely crisped pubescent to glabrous; bracts up to 5–35 mm. long; bracteoles 1·5–2·5 mm. long, lanceolate–acuminate.
Twining to suberect herb, 25–90 cm. tall from a tuber c. 2–4 cm. in diameter; stem not or sparsely branched, ribbed, practically glabrous in all its length.
Capsule subglobose to ovoid, inferior part c. 3 mm. long with 10 distinct nerves connected by weak transversal nerves; valves c. 3 mm. long.
Calyx–lobes narrowly triangular, erect to ± reflexed, 1·5–3·6 mm. long, glabrous, with 2–3 pairs of denticles at the margin.
Hypanthium broadly obconical, 10–nerved, very finely crisped pubescent to glabrous.
Seeds oblong, irregularly angular, ± compressed, 0·8–1 mm. long, reticulate, brown.
Ovary semi–inferior; style c. 4 mm. long.
