Perennial geophyte, 0.2-0.4 m high. Leaves dry at flowering, linear, 8-12 mm wide. Flowers 4-10, drooping, scarlet to carmine; perianth narrowly tubular near base, somewhat inflated above, ± 65-75 mm long, segments distinctly apiculate at tips; stamens and style shortly exserted from throat; stigma minutely 3-lobed. Flowering time Sept.-Nov.
Bulbous herb, up to 200 mm long. Leaves 2 or 3; present after flowering; blade linear, 300-500 x 8-12 mm. Flowers: in a 4-10-flowered umbel; pendulous; perianth with tube widest above middle, contracted or not towards throat, 50-60 mm long, lobes ovate-ellipsoid, 13-15 mm long, scarlet-red to carmine; Jul.-Jun. Fruit a 3-valved capsule.
