Characteristics

Bulb rather loose, ovoid with membranous brown tunic, up to about 5 cm in diameter, budding from the base. Leaves 4 to several from a bulb, linear-lanceolate to lorate, 20-45 cm long, 2-6 cm broad, smooth on margin. Scape produced with the leaves, 30-60 cm tall, 5-10 mm thick, subterete, hollow. Spathe-valves 2, lanceolate, 4-7 cm long. Flowers 2-9 in an umbel with pedicels 2-5 cm long. Perianth erect or suberect, normally scarlet, sometimes with a white throat, 7-9 cm long; tube more or less triangular, 3-5 cm long and approximately 2 cm wide at the throat; lobes more or less equal, spreading with pulvinate callus at base, 3.5-4.5 cm long and 2-3 cm broad. Stamens inserted on the perianth at the mouth of the tube, about 2 cm shorter than the lobes; anthers dorsifixed, oblong, 1.5 cm long before dehiscence. Ovary oblong-triquetrous, 812 cm long, becoming sub-globose on maturing, with black winged seeds.
