Characteristics

Bulbs in clusters, somewhat bottle-shaped, 3-6 cm in diameter, contracted into a short neck and partly or largely exposed above rocks, covered by a thick tunic of old leaf bases. Leaves 4-8, distichous, present at time of flowering, broadly strap-shaped, 30-45 cm long, 4.5-5 cm broad, somewhat twisted above middle, tough and leathery, glaucous. Peduncle 30-40 cm long, 1.5-2 cm diam., compressed and twisted. Spathe-valves 4, more or less linear-lanceolate, 6-8 cm long, 1-1.3 cm broad at base; pedicels 3-4 cm long. Flowers pendulous; perianth 4.5-5.5 cm long; tube red, 3-4 cm long; external lobes about 1.5 cm long, 6 mm broad; inner ones about 4 cm long, 7 cm broad, greenish-yellow. Stamens inserted in throat of tube; filaments about 6 mm long, expanded on either side near the base into lobes; lobes 1.5-2 mm long, brown tipped, connected to adjacent ones by a thin membrane forming a false 12-lobed corona; anthers 3 mm long, dorsifixed. Ovary obtusely 3-angled, 8 mm long; style about equal to perianth.
