Characteristics

Bulb firm, 6-6.5 cm diam., ± 7 cm long, contracted into a short neck, with tight brownish tunic, somewhat exposed above ground or rocks, producing loosely attached bulbils from the base. Leaves a few, distichous, narrowly lorate, tapering to both ends, 27-30 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, recurving from about the middle, eventually dying back but not all at one time. Scape about 10 cm long, 8-9 mm broad, hollow, cylindric below umbel and slightly compressed towards base. Bracts 2, up to about 5 cm long, linear-lanceolate, membranous, with small bracteoles subtending the individual flowers. Umbels 5(-10)-flowered; pedicels 1.5-3 cm, erect and sub-erect. Perianth erect, red, 5 cm long, divided to about 2/3, tube infundibuliform, ± 1.5 cm long; lobes ± oblong-lanceolate, with margin somewhat undulate and recurved when young, flattening with age, outer 3 ± 9 mm broad, slightly apiculate, inner 10-11 mm broad. Stamens in 2 series; filaments about equal in length to perianth lobes, filiform, very gradually narrowing upwards, 3 opposite outer perianth-lobes arising at mouth of tube, 3 fused to inner perianth-lobes for 1 cm; anthers oblong, dorsifixed, versatile. Ovary 3-angled, with numerous superposed ovules in each loculus. Capsule not fully developed in cultivation; seeds oblong, black, rugose. Flowering time: September (in cultivation).
