Characteristics

Climbing or erect shrubs, sometimes quite extensive lianes. Leaves opposite or in whorls of 3 or 4, petiolate; stipules interpetiolar, ovate-triangular, acute. Flowers small, dimorphic, in axillary and terminal cymes, often running together to form fairly extensive panicles. Calyx-tube subglobose; lobes short, subequal, persistent. Corolla funnel-shaped or hypocrateriform; throat hairy, particularly in the case of long-styled flowers; lobes 5–6, valvate. Stamens 5–6, included in long-styled flowers, exserted in short-styled flowers. Ovary 2-locular, each locule with many ovules; style filiform, divided into 2 filiform stigmata. Capsule splitting loculicidally; seeds inserted parallel to the surface of the placenta, surrounded by a lacerate or erose wing.
