Characteristics

Stout annual herb, glabrous or sparsely pubescent with non-glandular hairs. Mature leaves from broadly-ovate and somewhat angular to rounded-triangular, the lamina up to 14 cm long, 16 cm wide, with a few shallow usually toothed or sinuate lobes. Calyx to 3.5 cm long, 5–lobed, the lobes 4–7 mm long. Corolla 4–6 cm long, white, 5–lobed, the lobes ending in a point 1–2 mm long. Stamens not exserted; anthers 3–4 mm long. Style c. 3 cm long; stigma below anthers. Capsule ellipsoid or nearly so, to 4 cm long, erect, spiny; spines usually 40–60, stout, conical, sharp, usually longer near capsule summit, the longest at least half length of capsule; persistent base of calyx base to 8 mm long. Seeds 4–5 mm long, black or grey.

Lamina 5-18-(25) × 4-16-(20) cm, broadly ovate, shallowly lobed; veins somewhat puberulent, especially above; apex of lobes obtuse or subacute. Calyx 2.5-3.5 cm long, ribbed, reflexing at fruiting; teeth 3-5 mm long, subequal. Corolla c. 5 cm long, funnelform, white; lobes 1-2 mm long, aristate. Fr. to 5-(6) × 3-(4) cm (excluding spines), narrowly elliptic-ovoid, erect; spines moderate in number, to 2.5-(3) cm long, stout, the uppermost > lower. Seed c. 4 mm wide, subreniform, black, rugose.
Erect, branched, subherbaceous annual, up to 1.5 m high, ± pubescent; bad smell when crushed. Stems round to angled, green or ± brown. Leaves ovate, up to 200 x 200 mm, margins sublobed, irregularly dentate, dark green above, paler below; petioles up to 80 mm long. Flowers solitary, axillary on pedicels up to 15 mm long. Calyx up to 30 mm long, cylindrical, bases reflexed and enlarged in fruit. Corolla narrowly funnel-shaped, up to 65 mm long, white or cream-coloured. Seeds compressed kidney-shaped, 4 mm long, finely pitted, large depressions on backs, grey-brown. Flowering time Oct.-May.

Fruit an ovoid capsule, up to 70 x 60 mm, covered with stout, spreading, spine-like outgrowths of similar length, up to 30 mm long.
