Characteristics

Monoecious shrub or small tree to 5 m high; branchlets slender (c. 1 mm diam. at apex), strigose, with long coarse hairs and minute fine hairs. Leaves: lamina broadly ovate, rarely elliptic-ovate, 4–17 cm long, 3–14 cm wide, acuminate, base broadly cuneate to subcordate, upper surface with sparse to dense curved hairs, lower surface densely white-tomentose; cystoliths punctiform; lateral veins in 3 or 4 pairs on each side, the basal pair prominent, extending to distal third; petiole 2.5–9 cm long; stipules 4–8 mm long, pubescent. Inflorescence axillary and at nodes, in short cymose clusters on a short peduncle, lower inflorescences male, upper ones female. Male flowers c. 1 mm long, glabrous. Female flowers c. 0.5 mm long. Achene tightly adnate and enclosed by perianth.
