Characteristics

Multi-stemmed or occasionally single-stemmed shrub or small tree to 4 m high. Bark smooth to flaky and shallowly fissured, grey or brown. New shoots silvery white silky. Branchlets sparsely short-sericeous, glabrescent with age. Leaves opposite; lamina elliptic to ovate, (13–) 18–55 mm long, 10–25 (–35) mm wide, cuneate base, flat margin, acute (to mucronate or shortly acuminate) apex, coriaceous, discolorous, matte or ± shiny above, glabrous, with numerous minute oil glands (visible without magnification or requiring 10 × lens), midvein ± flush (to slightly raised) on lower surface, lateral veins not visible or indistinct; petiole (1–) 1.5–4.5 mm long, glabrous to sparsely hairy. Inflorescences terminal or axillary. Hypanthium cupulate, sparsely sericeous (particularly at base). Calyx lobes 4 or 5 (sometimes both on same plant), free potions 1.2–1.5 mm long, persistent in fruit. Petals 4 or 5, 3–3.5 mm long, yellowish white or white, sometimes with pinkish tinge on back, oil glands common. Stamens 16–25; filaments to 3.5 mm long, white; anthers eglandular. Ovary 3-or 4-locular. Stigma terete to slightly capitate by virtue of subapical constriction of style. Berry subglobose to globose, 6.5–7.5 mm long, 8–10 mm wide, not constricted along locular walls, dark bluish black or blackish to purple at maturity, crowned by calyx lobes. Seeds up to 8.
