Leaves mostly arising from the base of the stem, often persisting after the inflorescences have died, lamina palmatisect, usually nearly to the base, segments acute, pubescent especially on the nerves; petioles of the lower leaves up to 15 cm. or more long.
Sepals usually deep blue, more rarely violet, pinkish or white, pubescent; spur 0.5–0.8 cm. long, stout, almost straight.
Erect perennial herb up to about 1 m. high with yellowish-pubescent stems and inflorescences.
Follicles 3, shortly and densely pubescent.
Erect herb, rather lax, to 4 ft. high.
Flowers 2–2.5 cm. across.
Flowers bright blue.
