Erect perennial herb 40–70 cm tall, with several stems from creeping rootstock; stems simple, rarely branched at apex, glabrous or with fine hairs just below insertion of leaves.. Leaves rather crowded, narrowly lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, 1.7–3.5 cm long, 0.2–1.4 cm wide, cuneate at base, subentire or remotely obscurely serrulate, acute or attenuate, glabrous or less often with scattered crispate hairs, glandular-punctate, 3-veined.. Capitula terminal, solitary or rarely in lax 3–6-headed corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula absent or very short; involucre broadly hemispherical, 7–9 mm long, 7–20 mm in diameter at flowering time; phyllaries 4–5-seriate, purple-tinged in upper part, usually somewhat recurved at the apex, lanceolate, 2–8 mm long, glabrous or sometimes sericeous-pubescent in upper part or merely ciliate on margins; receptacular paleae numerous, similar to the inner phyllaries, sometimes expanded and hairy at the apex, apiculate or pungent, 7–9.5 mm long..
