Achenes 1–2 mm. long, angular oblong-turbinate, c. 5-ribbed, setulose on the ribs, with scattered large brown cells on the sides; pappus 2-seriate, the outer series of 5–6 chartaceous oblong-elliptic scales c. 2.5 mm. long, the inner of 5–6 narrower paleaceous setae to 4 mm. long and barbellate-laciniate on the margins.
Leaves spirally arranged, ± grading into the phyllaries, subsessile, mostly 1.5–3 x 0.3–1.4 cm., lanceolate to narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, acute at the apex, cuneate to rounded below, margins subentire or obscurely denticulate, somewhat revolute, lamina glabrous glandular-punctate and obscurely 3-nerved from the base.
Phyllaries numerous, appressed-imbricate, narrowly lanceolate to lorate ± differentiated above, glabrous to pubescent, finely long-ciliolate; the outer from c. 2 mm. long, the inner to c. 8 mm. long.
Stems strict, simple (rarely branched at the apex), densely leafy, glabrous, or sparsely pilose just below the insertion of the leaves.
An erect tufted perennial herb to c. 70 cm. tall, with annual stems from a small woody rootstock; roots thong-like.
Corollas purple, 5–8 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, deeply lobed, densely to sparsely setose on the lobes.
Capitula usually solitary and terminal, sometimes 2–3(6) corymbosely cymose at the stem apex.
Receptacle flat, paleaceous; paleae purplish, 7–9 mm. long, lorate, somewhat pilose.
Involucres 7–9 x 12–20 mm., broadly cup-shaped.
