Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Dewildemania

Characteristics

Erect perennial herb 40–70 cm tall, with several stems from creeping rootstock; stems simple, rarely branched at apex, glabrous or with fine hairs just below insertion of leaves.. Leaves rather crowded, narrowly lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, 1.7–3.5 cm long, 0.2–1.4 cm wide, cuneate at base, subentire or remotely obscurely serrulate, acute or attenuate, glabrous or less often with scattered crispate hairs, glandular-punctate, 3-veined.. Capitula terminal, solitary or rarely in lax 3–6-headed corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula absent or very short; involucre broadly hemispherical, 7–9 mm long, 7–20 mm in diameter at flowering time; phyllaries 4–5-seriate, purple-tinged in upper part, usually somewhat recurved at the apex, lanceolate, 2–8 mm long, glabrous or sometimes sericeous-pubescent in upper part or merely ciliate on margins; receptacular paleae numerous, similar to the inner phyllaries, sometimes expanded and hairy at the apex, apiculate or pungent, 7–9.5 mm long.. Corolla purple, 6.5–8 mm long, lobes 2–3 mm long, pubescent with long fine hairs.. Achenes (immature) 1.2–2 mm long, 5-ribbed, sparsely ascending-pilose; pappus double, outer of narrow oblong-lanceolate scales 2–2.5 mm long, inner of 5–6 scales or flattened setae 3–4.5 mm long.. Fig. 51.
More
Achenes 1–2 mm. long, angular oblong-turbinate, c. 5-ribbed, setulose on the ribs, with scattered large brown cells on the sides; pappus 2-seriate, the outer series of 5–6 chartaceous oblong-elliptic scales c. 2.5 mm. long, the inner of 5–6 narrower paleaceous setae to 4 mm. long and barbellate-laciniate on the margins.
Leaves spirally arranged, ± grading into the phyllaries, subsessile, mostly 1.5–3 x 0.3–1.4 cm., lanceolate to narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, acute at the apex, cuneate to rounded below, margins subentire or obscurely denticulate, somewhat revolute, lamina glabrous glandular-punctate and obscurely 3-nerved from the base.
Phyllaries numerous, appressed-imbricate, narrowly lanceolate to lorate ± differentiated above, glabrous to pubescent, finely long-ciliolate; the outer from c. 2 mm. long, the inner to c. 8 mm. long.
Stems strict, simple (rarely branched at the apex), densely leafy, glabrous, or sparsely pilose just below the insertion of the leaves.
An erect tufted perennial herb to c. 70 cm. tall, with annual stems from a small woody rootstock; roots thong-like.
Corollas purple, 5–8 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, deeply lobed, densely to sparsely setose on the lobes.
Capitula usually solitary and terminal, sometimes 2–3(6) corymbosely cymose at the stem apex.
Receptacle flat, paleaceous; paleae purplish, 7–9 mm. long, lorate, somewhat pilose.
Involucres 7–9 x 12–20 mm., broadly cup-shaped.
