Characteristics

Plant to 1 m high, tufted, solitary; tufts to 0.3 m wide at base. Roots fibrous. Stems to 30 cm long, adjacent. Leaves 20-90 cm long; sheath conduplicate, ±completely occluded distally; lamina 1.8-4.5 cm wide, flat, attenuate. Inflorescence exceeding foliage, narrowly cylindrical to ovate in outline; cymules tightly condensed, 5-50-flowered; pedicels 2-5 mm long, angularly ribbed. Perianth segments narrowly ovate to elliptic, dark-blue to violet. Sepals 6-7 mm long, 5-nerved. Petals 5-6 mm long, 5-nerved at least proximally. Filament swelling 0.8-1.2 mm long, yellow; anthers 3-4 mm long, red-brown. Ovules 6-8 per locule. Berry 6-8 mm long. Seed 2.6-3.5 mm long; testa smooth but minutely areolate, to minutely colliculate, black, shiny.
