Characteristics

Plant to 1 m high, forming mats to 20 m or more wide at base. Roots fibrous. Stems 5-60 cm long, touching or up to 1 m apart. Leaves 10-45 cm long; sheaths conduplicate, completely occluded distally; lamina 1-1.5 cm wide, recurving in T.S., obtuse. Inflorescence ±within foliage, narrowly cylindrical in outline, interrupted, decurving; cymules condensed, 2-8-flowered; pedicels less than 1 cm long, sharply ridged to winged. Perianth segments elliptic to ovate-elliptic, mid-to dark-blue. Sepals 7.5-8.5 mm long, 5-7-nerved. Petals 6.5-7.5 mm long, 3-5-nerved. Filament swelling 1-1.5 mm long, yellow; anthers 2.8-3.5 mm long, yellow-brown. Ovules 4-8 per locule. Berry 6-12 mm long. Seed 2.9-3.9 mm long; testa smooth but minutely areolate, black, shiny.
