Characteristics

Plant to 2 m high, tufted, solitary; tufts less than 10 cm wide at base. Roots fleshy-fibrous. Stems to c. 25 cm long, adjacent. Leaves 15-90 cm long; sheath conduplicate, ±wholly occluded distally; lamina 0.8-3.8 cm wide, ±flat to recurving (to revolute when dry), cucullate, obtuse. Inflorescence exceeding foliage, ±conical in outline, interrupted; cymules expanded, 2-8-flowered; pedicels to c. 2 cm long, evenly rounded. Perianth mid-blue to dark violet. Sepals narrowly ovate to elliptic, 7-10.5 mm long, 5-nerved. Petals narrowly elliptic, 7-9.5 mm long, 5-or rarely 7-nerved. Filament swelling 0.9-1.8 mm long, bright yellow; anthers 3.5-4 mm long, brown-yellow to deep blue. Ovules 6-10 per locule. Berry 5-8 mm long. Seed 3.5-5 mm long; testa reticulately grooved and minutely colliculate, dull to ±shiny.
