Characteristics

An annual herb, glabrous, shining, 1.5-9 in. high, simple or loosely branched; stem and branches slender, furrowed; radical leaves rosulate, oblong, oval or runcinate-oblanceolate, rounded or obtuse at the apex, narrowed at the base, membranous, sinuate-dentate or pinnatifid, 0.5-1.25 in. long, 0.125-0.375 in. broad, lobes ovate and obtuse; petiole 0.34-1 in. long; upper leaves opposite or alternate, often distant; peduncles axillary, slender, 1-3.5 in. long; calyx-segments lanceolate, acuminate, shortly ciliolate, 0.125-0.167 in. long; corolla about 0.25 in. long, less than 0.5 in. broad, with two bluntly conical spur-like pouches 0.125-0.167 in. long; stamens all fertile; filaments subulate; capsules ovoid-linear, 0.25-0.375 in. long, 0.083-0.125 in. broad.

Corolla lobes reddish or brownish purple or greyish magenta, rarely pink, darker at base with 2 or 3 yellow dots in slanting lines below upper lobes. Spurs conical, ± 2-4 mm long, projecting straight back but somewhat upwards at ends.

Capsules linear to oblong and falcate, 10-12 x ± 2 mm.
