Characteristics

Perennial herb with woody rhizomatous rootstock; stems 4-ribbed or almost winged, mostly much branched. Leaves sessile, linear or linear-lanceolate, the lateral nerves rather obscure; stipules with several fimbriae from a short sheath. Flowers small, markedly heterostylous, in many-flowered terminal rather dense corymbiform inflorescences. Calyx-lobes 4, small, narrowly triangular, separated by colleters. Corolla-tube almost cylindrical, slightly narrowed to the base, short, glabrous inside; lobes 4, oblong-ovate. Ovary 2-locular; ovules numerous on peltate placentas; style shortly divided into 2 branches; stigmas ellipsoid. Capsule subglobose, shortly beaked, apically loculicidally and septicidally dehiscent. Seeds numerous, angular.
