Characteristics

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, with subauriculate base, oblong-obovate to spatulate, pinnatifid to entire. Capitula in lax corymbs or panicles, disciform; phyllaries 2–3-seriate; receptacle ± swollen, domed, epaleate. Outer florets in many rows, female, fertile, tubular, 2–3(–4)-toothed, sparsely glandular; central florets fewer than the marginal ones, hermaphrodite, 4–5-lobed; anthers obtuse at the base, at the apex with an obtuse, triangular appendage; style-branches with sterile lanceolate appendages longer than the receptive part. Achenes obovoid, slightly compressed, glabrous, glandular near base and apex; pappus absent or of few caducous bristles or a small rim.
