More
Shrubs or small trees; spines present or absent; prickles absent. Leaves bipinnate; rhachis glandular at insertion of pinnae; pinnae each with several to many pairs of leaflets. Inflorescences of axillary spikes, solitary or appearing clustered; upper part of spike cylindrical, of hermaphrodite flowers, lower part broader, of differently coloured neuter flowers. Calyx shortly 5-toothed. Corolla-lobes 5, ± united below. Stamens 10, all fertile in hermaphrodite flowers; anthers (in our species) with a stalked apical gland which is caducous. Staminodes of neuter flowers elongate, without anthers. Pods clustered, coriaceous, narrowly oblong, compressed, usually irregularly contorted or spiral, indehiscent or opening irregularly or (not in our species) dehiscent. Seeds (in the African species at least) ± compressed, ovoid to ellipsoid, smooth.
Shrubs or small trees with spinescent lateral shoots. Leaves bipinnate, some with stipular thorns; axes with extrafloral nectaries; pinnae 1-3-jugate; leaflets 5-9-jugate, sessile, opposite. Inflorescence axillary, solitary or fasciculate, spicate. Flowers 5-merous, polymorphic; basal ones sterile with 10 filiform staminodes; central ones staminate with 10 free stamens; upper ones perfect; calyx gamosepalous with short teeth; petals ±united. Stamens free; anthers with stipitate gland. Pods narrowly oblong to linear, flat or compressed, straight or mostly curved to contorted, clustered, subsessile, indehiscent or not regularly dehiscent. Seeds elliptic, compressed; pleurogram present.
