Characteristics

Perennial herb or subshrub, scrambling or trailing, to 150 cm tall; stems 6-angular, ± prominently pale-ridged, shortly antrorse-pubescent to sparsely so, later glabrescent. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, 3-12 x 0.8-5.7 cm, base cuneate or attenuate, margin often shallowly repand, apex attenuate or acuminate, upper surface sparsely pilose, veins beneath and margin antrorse-pubescent or leaves largely glabrous; lateral veins (4)5-7(8) pairs; petiole 12-53 mm long. Inflorescence axillary, 1-2(4) umbels of (1)2-5 cymules per axil, rarely partially compounded; umbel peduncle (6)10-58 mm long, antrorse-or spreading-pubescent; main axis bracts usually linear-lanceolate, 3-8 x 0.5-1 mm, occasionally more leafy, then lanceolate or elliptic, to 19.5 x 2.5 mm; longest cymule peduncle in each umbel 3-20(32) mm long; cymule bract pairs unequal, ratio 1.2-1.55(1.7): 1, green, smaller of each pair somewhat paler towards base and later turning scarious, larger bract elliptic or somewhat obovate, 13-19 x 6.5-14.5 mm, base cuneate, apex acute or attenuate, mucronulate, palmately 3-7-veined but often only midrib prominent, surface largely glabrous or antrorse-pubescent and/or spreading-pilose on midrib, margin, and sometimes exposed portion of interior surface, with or without short glandular hairs towards margin or scattered throughout; bracteoles pale green with pale-hyaline margin, lanceolate, 7-10.5 mm long, apex attenuate. Calyx lobes 4-5.5 mm long, glandular-puberulent, margin strigulose. Corolla 20-27 mm long, white, pink or mauve, eglandular-pubescent externally, limb with interspersed glandular hairs; tube 8-11 mm long; lip held in upper position oblong, 10-16 x 3.5-5.5 mm, palate puberulous; lip held in lower position elliptic, 9.5-15 x 5-7.5 mm. Staminal filaments 7.5-11.5 mm long, hairy mainly beneath; anther thecae 0.8-1.2 mm long, superposed and sometimes becoming separated. Style sparsely strigulose. Capsule 7-9.5 mm long, eglandular-pubescent, with interspersed glandular hairs towards apex; placental base elastic. Seeds discoid, 2.2-2.7 mm in diameter, with minute hooked tubercles mainly towards rim.
