Characteristics

Very bushy suffrutex up to 1.5 m high, sometimes scandent to 2 m; stem woody at the base, seldom stoloniferous. Leaves ovate, acute, cuneate, often decurrent at the base, (9-)13-38(-57) x (2-)4-12(-17) mm; petiole 0.6-4.2(-7.2) mm long. Inflorescence of single or 2-3 inflorescence units umbellately arranged, often compounded, inflorescence axis (4-)7-19(-24) mm long, longest peduncle of inflorescence units (3-)8-19(-22) mm long. Bracts: secondary bracts lanceolate, (1.4-)2.1-3.7(-4.3) x 0.4-0.8(-0.9) mm, strigose on margins and midribs, trichomes multicellular and eglandular; tertiary bracts lanceolate to ovate, acuminate, cuneate at base (4-)5-8(-9) x 1.4-2.4 mm, outer surface strigose on margins and veins, otherwise glabrous, inner surface with many glandular trichomes and few multicellular eglandular trichomes. Calyx: tube 1.5 mm long; lobes 7 mm long, outer surface dense with multicellular glandular trichomes, inner surface with glandular and eglandular trichomes. Corolla cobalt violet; tube cylindric below, subcampanulate above, resupinate, (6-)7-9(-10) mm long, with glandular and curved eglandular trichomes; lip in lower position elliptic, (12-)14-18(-20) x (4.8-)5.3-7.0(-7.9) mm; lip in upper position narrowly elliptic, (11-)14-17(-19) x (2.8-)3.3-4.4(-5.3) mm, with dark honey guides. Stamens: filaments with ornamented, eglandular and small glandular trichomes; thecae superposed, but touching. Disc cupular, with two short, broad, hooked awns. Gynoecium: stigma bilobed; style strigose; ovary ovoid, dense with small glandular trichomes and with a few multicellular eglandular trichomes near the apex. Capsule (8.0-)8.6-10.7(-11.4) x (3.5-)3.6-4.3(-4.4) mm, with dense glandular and eglandular pubescence. Seeds 2.3-3.2(-3.7) x 2.2-2.7(-3.0) mm, rough and tuberculate.
More
Dwarf shrub, up to 1.5 m high, sometimes to 2.0 m high. Inflorescence axis longer than 5 mm so that inflorescence does not appear to be contracted. Tertiary bracts 2.5 mm or narrower.
