Erect or scrambling perennial (rarely annual) herb or subshrub, 25-200 cm tall; stems 6-angular or weakly so, base often woody, antrorse-pubescent at least when young, often also ± densely sericeous, sometimes glabrescent. Leaves sometimes absent at flowering, ovate or elliptic, 3.5-16 x 2-7.5 cm, base (cuneate-) attenuate, apex attenuate or acuminate, upper surface and veins beneath sparsely pilose or largely glabrous, margin and midrib above pubescent; lateral veins 5-8 pairs; petiole 1-6.5 cm long. Inflorescence axillary, (1)2-5(7) umbels of (2)3-5(7) cymules per axil forming dense fascicles; primary peduncle of innermost umbel 2-14(55) mm long but outer umbels usually subsessile, peduncles antrorse-pubescent and/or sericeous; main axis bracts linear-lanceolate, 2.5-6(7.5) mm long; longest cymule peduncle in each umbel 3-9(12.5) mm long; cymule bracts often unequal in size within each umbel, those of central cymule sometimes markedly larger, green, often turning scarious in fruit, pairs slightly to strongly unequal, ratio 1.2-1.9(2.3): 1, larger bract broadly ovate or ovate-elliptic, 9-2.0(25) x 6-12.5(14.5) mm, base rounded or obtuse, margin sometimes revolute, apex acute or attenuate, mucronate, smaller bract often more elliptic or suborbicular with apex (acute) obtuse or rounded, surfaces and particularly margin white-pilose to sericeous, also glandular-and eglandular-puberulent at least towards apex of larger bract within, surface palmately 5-9-nerved; bracteoles pale throughout, linear-lanceolate, 1.8-5(7.5) mm long. Calyx lobes 2.5-4(5.5) mm long, glandular-puberulent, sometimes with long eglandular hairs towards margin. Corolla (10)13-18.5(26) mm long, pink, purple or rarely white, eglandular-pubescent externally; tube (6)8-11.5 mm long; lip held in upper position oblong-obovate, (4)6-10.5(15) x 3-5 mm, palate sparsely puberulous towards mouth; lip held in lower position broadly elliptic-obovate, (4)6-8.5(14.5) x 4-6 mm. Staminal filaments (4)4.5-8.5(17.5) mm long, glabrous or with sparse hairs towards base; anther thecae 1-1.2 mm long, superposed and somewhat oblique. Style sparsely strigulose distally. Capsule 5-7.5 mm long, puberulous to pubescent, with short glandular hairs and few to numerous, sometimes longer eglandular hairs; placental base elastic. Seeds 1.5-2 mm in diameter, with minute hooked tubercles mainly towards rim, sometimes sparse at maturity.
