Characteristics

Phyllaries numerous, stiffly slightly diverging, the outermost ± patent and extending onto the capitulum stalk, greenish-stramineous, chartaceous, sharply ciliolate on upper margins otherwise glabrous; the outer phyllaries from c. 3 mm. long, ovate-lanceolate, shortly acuminate; the middle phyllaries to c. 24 mm. long, narrowly oblong-lanceolate, ± broadly scarious-winged, inrolled and acuminate-pungent in the upper part; the inner series of phyllaries somewhat shorter, mostly white-scarious and sharply cuspidate.

Leaves 9–16 x 1–4.5 cm., elliptic to oblanceolate, acute at the apex, narrowing below into a winged midrib to c. 3 cm. long, somewhat stem-clasping; margins sharply serrate; upper surfaces green and glabrous, lower surfaces white araneose-sericeous (the indumentum sometimes peeling off); ± markedly pinnately-nerved.
Involucres mostly 20–25 mm. long, 15–25 mm. in diam. in the upper part, broadly obconic-campanulate.
Similar to D. plantaginifolia but differing in leaf and phyllary characters.
Capitula stalked, 1–7 clustered in the leaf rosette.
