Characteristics

Inner florets c. 9; corollas pale-purple, 8–9 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, lobes erect c. 4 mm. long linear, subacute and recurved at the apex; achenes c. 3 mm. long, turbinate, strongly c. 10-ribbed, densely whitish appressed-ascending setose between the ribs, most numerous towards the achene base and ± equalling the achene in length, the lowermost hairs shorter often spreading; pappus 2-seriate, the outer of c. 20 slender subplumose-ciliate setae 9–10 mm. long, the inner of c. 10 paleaceous setae scarious-winged in the lower part, c. 10 mm. long and subplumose-ciliate.

Phyllaries numerous, stiffly chartaceous to subcoriacous with a narrow membranous margin, sharply ciliolate and often dull purplish towards the apex; the outer phyllaries from c. 5 mm. long, lanceolate-subulate, usually ± strongly recurved, araneose-lanate below; the inner phyllaries to c. 20 mm. long, linear-lanceolate; the innermost glabrescent, tapering to an acute or long acuminate often recurved apex.
Leaves mostly 1.5–5 x 0.5–1.5 cm., subspathulate-oblanceolate, ± elliptic in the upper half and narrowing ± abruptly below the middle into a winged midrib 0.2–1.5 cm. long, acute at the apex, narrowly semi-amplexicaul at the base, margins obscured subserrate, uniformly silvery-grey thinly appressed-lanate on the upper surface, more densely so beneath.
Outer floret corollas absent, ovary rudimentary 0.5–1 mm. long, pappus several-seriate of numerous barbellate setae to c. 20 mm. long, ± equalling the involucre in length.
Capitula few-many, solitary and terminal on branches or short shoots, subsessile usually axillary, subtended by several leaves and leaf-like bracts.
A straggling prostrate or low spreading bushy perennial herb from a woody taproot.
Involucre mostly 15–20 x 6–15 mm., spreading to c. 25 mm. wide, campanulate.
