Phyllaries numerous large, the outer spreading-reflexed the remainder stiffly ascending-diverging, the outermost usually extending down the capitulum stalk, also reflexed, silvery-green sometimes reddish-tinged, coriaceous, glabrous, the margins narrowly membranous sometimes ± inrolled in the upper part, minutely serrulate, apices cuspidate to acuminate-pungent; from c. 10 mm. long on the outside to c. 35 mm. long inside; the middle phyllaries 6–10 mm. wide, ovate-acuminate to lanceolate-acuminate.
Corollas creamy to brownish with purplish lobes, 10–11 mm. long, infundibuliform; lobes 5–6 mm. long, linear, erect; achenes c. 2 mm. long, narrowly turbinate, densely long ascending hispid; pappus copious, several seriate, of plumose white setae 7–10 mm. long, shorter on the outside, seta bristles c. 1 mm. long.
Capitula solitary and terminal, or less often up to c. 12 terminal on short branches in upper leaf axils.
An erect robust perennial herb, 15–40 cm. tall from a woody rootstock; roots numerous, thong-like.
Stems annual, 1-several, simple or shortly branched near the apex, leafy, thinly whitish araneose.
Involucres mostly 30–40 mm. long, 30–50 mm. in diam., broadly campanulate.
