Characteristics

Frutex erectus ramosus, fide collect, cr. (0.6-)1-2(-2.5) m altus. Rami patentes, glabri, cortice in partibus iunioribus chartaceo ochroleuco, demum cinereo, in partibus vetustioribus rimoso obtecti, usque ad capitula foliati; in axillis foliorum innovationem reductam aculeam conicam tomenti plenam simulantem gerentes. Folia opposita summis interdum alternis exceptis, sessilia, in statu sicco rigidi-membranacea vel subcoriacea, (in vivo leviter carnosa?), ovata vel elliptica, basi saepe in auriculas rotundatas producta, subcordata, rarius ± rotundata vel cuneatim angustata, (2-)3-6(-10) cm longa, (1.5-)2-4(-6) cm lata, apice acuta vel subrotundata, in spinam tenuem flexilem 1-5 mm longam excurrentia, margine plana, integerrima, inermia vel paucis spinis ei in apice similibus obsita, supra et subtus glabra (raro primum floccosi-araneosa, mox glabrescentia). Capitula ligulis expansis 4-7 cm diam. Involucri squamae glabrae, exteriores 4-5, foliaceae, late ovatae, cr. 18-35 mm longae, cr. 15-30 mm latae, apice rotundatae vel subacutae, in spinam tenuem cr. 1 mm longam excurrentes, margine inermes, rarius paucis spinis ei in apice similibus obsitae; sequentes cito minores et transeuntes in interiores numerosiores uniseriatas ovati-lanceolatas vel triangulati-lanceolatas 2-6 mm longas 1-5 mm latas in spinulam subpungentem cr. 0.5 mm longam excurrentes margine brevissime et minutissime ciliatas. Receptaculum profunde alveolatum alveolis achaenia matura tota includentes pappo interdum incluso; parietes in parte centrali membranaceae, in partibus marginalibus incrassatae et indurescentes; margines parietum integerrimae inermes. Achaenia non solum in partibus marginalibus receptaculi, sed etiam in parte centrali ad maturitatem pervenientia, pilis sericeis brevibus vel brevissimis obtecta. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 20, lanceolatae vel lineari-lanceolatae, plumosi-laceratae, 1-1.5 mm longae.
