Herba perennis 1-4 dm alta; caules singuli vel pauci e caudice usque 1 cm crasso exeuntes erecti vel adscendentes simplices vel laxe ramosi basi conferte foliati; caules et rami striati-leviter angulati glanduloso-puberuli (exsiccati hirti) glabrescentes apicem versus in pedunculos usque 10(-15) cm longos nudos monocephalos abeuntes. Folia alterna membranacea giandulosoqmbescentia (exsiccata hirta) saepe glabrescentia margine remote denticulata vel leviter sinuato-dentata vel integerrima, basalia oblanceolata-spathulata-oblonga in petiolum semiamplexicaulem sensim longeque angustata apice rotundata-subacuta saepe calloso-mucronulata petiolo incluso usque 15 cm longa usque 2 cm lata, cetera sessilia lineari-lanceolata vel linearia sursmn sensim decrescentia; nervus medius crassus subtus elevatus, nervi laterales in foliis inferioribus saepe conspicui. Involucrum late campanulatum 6-10 mm altum; squamae c. 13 in statu florendi subbiseriatae deinde sensim unam fere seriem formantes lanceolatae acutae-acuminatae per medium dorsum virides glandulosoqmberulae margine albido-scariosae + ciliolatae. Flores radii involucri squamas numero aequantes; ligulae supra albae subtus purpureae-lilacinae involucrum 2-plo superantes. Flores disci involucro aequilongi vel paullo breviores; corollae luteae lobis non barbatis; antherae apice appendice atroviolacea. Achaenia matura dura glabra vel subglabra 4-5 mm longa 3-angulari-obovoidea vel interdum inconspicue 5-6 angulari-obovoidea, angulis obtusis vel rarius subacutis; latera laevia vel leviter foveolata.

Flowers: ray florets female, fertile, upper surface white, lower surface purple to mauve or coppery; disc florets functionally male, yellow or whitish; Oct.-Jan., Apr. Fruit developing from ray florets, with cypsela obovoid, 3-6-angular, glabrous. Pappus absent.

Leaves: cauline ones shorter and narrower than basal ones, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, narrowed to a petiole-like, clasping base, apex acute or subacute, mucronate; basal leaves up to 150 x 20 mm, margins entire, or with few, hard teeth, wavy, narrowed to stalk-like base, repand or remotely callose-denticu-late. Capitula terminal, solitary, ± 40 mm in diam. Ray florets creamy white above, bluish mauve beneath. Disc florets whitish. Flowering time Sept.-Mar. Cypselae ± 6 mm long, obovoid, 3-angled.
