Herba perennis 2-5 dm alta; caules plures vel rarius singuli e caudice subterraneo usque 1.5 cm crasso lignoso exeuntes suberecti-adscendentes basi laxe ramosi vel rarius simplices inferne + suffrutescentes; caules et rami teretes striati glanduloso-pubescentes (exsiccati hirti-asperi); internodia supra basin 1-3 cm longa. Folia alterna membranacea oblanceolata-elliptica-anguste oblonga-linearia 3-6(-15) cm longa 0.5-1.5(-2) cm lata sessilia vel in petiolum inconspicuum angustata apice acuta vel obtusa et mucronulata margine grosse dentata-denticulata, dentibus remotis utrinque 2-5 adusque 5 mm altis mucronulatis, vel rarius pauca integerrima, omnia glanduloso-pubescentia (exsiccata hirta-aspera); nervus medius subtus elevatus, nervi laterales in foliis inferioribus utrinque 1-3 conspicui. Capitula in apicibus caulium et ramorum solitaria; pedunculi capitulorum graciles 10-20 cm longi nudi dense glanduloso-pubescentes. Involucrum hemisphaericum 7-9 mm altum; squamae c. 13 subuniseriatae lanceolatae acuminatae dorso glanduloso-puberulae margine sat late albido-scariosae vel passim violaceae. Flores radii involucri 260 squamas immero aequantes; ligulae supra subtusque rubicundae involucrum plus duplo superantes. Flores disci involucro fere aequilongi vel usque 5 mm breviores, exteriores lobis atropurpureis ovatotriangularibus non barbatis, interiores lobis valde vel minute gibbosis vel saepe ut in exterioribus non gibbosis. Achaenia matura dura glabra vel apicem versus glanduloso-puberula 5-7 mm longa 2-3 mm diam. anguste triangulari-obovoidea-ellipsoidea, angulis elevatis acutis (vel interiore obtuso), apice + conspicue trituberculata; latera leviter rugosa et foveolata vel laevia, radialia costa longitudinali obsoleta interdum instructa.

In Tasmania found on low foreshore associated with Acacia melanoxylon, Bursaria spinosa, Rosa canina, grass species, and Allocasuarina; and in Victoria it grows close to the sea shore in sandy and sandy loam soils.
