A slender twining vine to 3 m, stems annual. Tuber fusiform to cylindrical, fleshy. Indumentum of coarse straight 0.1-0.7 mm long hairs on young stems (longest), petioles and petiolules, young leaf margins and inflorescences (most dense) only, colourless or red-brown. Stems unarmed, to c. 5 mm in diam. Leaf digitately (3-)5-foliolate; petioles 2.4-7.5 cm, petiolules 2-14(-20) mm; posterior leaflets 0.9-5.6 x 0.5-3.4 cm, sometimes asymmetric on the basal side of the leaflet, intermediate leaflets (where present) 1.6-8.0 x 0.7-3.7 cm, terminal leaflet 3.1-10.2 x 1.2-5.2 cm, all elliptic to narrowly or broadly so, oblanceolate, obovate or somewhat rhombic, bases cuneate, apices rounded to truncate or rarely slightly emarginate, with an apiculus of variable length formed by the excurrent midrib, margins usually undulate, each leaflet with a single branching midrib, chartaceous to membranous, cystoliths sometimes visible. Inflorescences 1-3 per axil; male inflorescence 2.3-7.6 cm long, rarely compound, flowers lax, peduncles 0.5-2.1 cm long; female 1.8-16 cm long, peduncles 1.5-4 cm long. Flowers dull yellow to pale cream, scented, tepals membranous. Male flower conical-ovoid in bud; pedicels (0.5-)0.8-1.8(-2) mm long, slender, filiform, at ±90° to pendent inflorescence rachis, flower pendent at pedicel apex; floral bracts one at each pedicel apex, 1.5-2.7 x 0.4-0.7(-1.3) mm, ovate, acuminate, membranous, shorter than outer tepals; outer tepals 2.4-3(-3.3) x 0.9-1.8 mm, ovate to broadly so, apex obtuse to rounded, membranous, dorsally pubescent except on margins, ventrally glabrous; inner tepals 2.1-2.9 x 0.5-0.9 mm, lanceolate to narrowly ovate and acuminate, ± glabrous; anthers 0.3-0.55 x 0.4-0.63 mm, transversely rotund; filaments 0.03-1.13 mm, filiform; staminodia 0.4-1.25 mm, base thick, triquetrous, apex lanceolate, petaloid; pistillode c. 1 mm long, an erect, unbranched column. Female flower sessile; floral bracts 1.6-2.5 x 0.7-1.3 mm ovate, acuminate; outer tepals 1.25-1.63 x 0.63-1.2 mm, ovate to narrowly or broadly so, apex acute to obtuse, dorsally pubescent, ventrally glabrous; inner tepals 1.1-1.6 x 0.4-0.7 mm, lanceolate to narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic-oblong, apex acute to obtuse, dorsally pubescent, ventrally glabrous; staminodia 0.1-0.23 mm long, one per tepal, filiform to staminiform; ovary 2.3-7.1 mm long, elliptic in outline; style 0.25-0.45 (-0.58) mm long, erect, stigmatic surfaces recurved, narrowly oblong. Capsule 19-24 x 9-12 mm, elliptic to elliptic-oblong or narrowly obovate, base emarginate, apex obtuse to rounded. Seed 3.5-5 x 2-3 mm, with an apical projection, brown; wing (4-)7-11 x 4-5 mm, oblong-elliptic, apex obtuse to rounded, slightly erose.
