Characteristics

Evergreen tree 3.5-15 m. tall or shrub, much branched, with smooth grey or mottled grey bark (or rough and black fide Abdulla in F.D. 3860); slash yellow, branchlets slender, glabrous.. Leaves glossy, drying brown or greenish brown above, pale beneath, lanceolate-elliptic to oblanceolate-elliptic or narrowly oblong, 3-11(-13.5) cm. long, 1-4.5(-5.8) cm. wide, shortly but distinctly and usually acutely acuminate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, glabrous save for midrib minutely setulose with blackish hairs beneath towards the base, thickened and slightly revolute at the margin; lateral nerves in 5-7 pairs, impressed in life but drying indistinct above, prominent beneath; tertiary nerves and veins forming a very close but not very conspicuous reticulum; petiole 8 mm. long.. Male flowers (1-)2-4 in cymules in axils of leaves or fallen leaves; pedicels ± 1 mm. long; calyx cyathiform, 5 mm. long, shallowly 4-5-lobed, strigulose-pubescent on both surfaces; calyx-lobes triangular, ± 1 mm. long; corolla yellow with dark marks, hypocrateriform, 1.1 cm. long, glabrous except for the minutely ciliolate margins; corolla-tube 6 mm. long; corolla-lobes triangular-cordate, 5 mm. long, papillate; stamens ± 16, 6 mm. long, included; filaments 2.5 mm. long, sometimes united in pairs, inserted on the receptacle, glabrous; anthers 3.5 mm. long, apiculate, glabrous; rudimentary ovary ovoid, 2 mm. long, setulose.. Female flowers unknown, but apparently borne singly 2-3 together on the older branchlets below the leaves.. Fruit green, subglobose, 2 cm. long, 1.7 cm. wide, densely fulvous-strigose-tomentose, almost hidden by the accrescent calyx which is 2.5 cm. long, campanulate, fulvous-or brown-tomentose, coriaceous, glabrescent at maturity, with tube up to 1.5 cm. long and 5 lingulate-triangular lobes, 1.6 mm. long, 0.8 mm. wide, obtuse or acute at the apex and margin often reflexed at the base forming a shallow sinus..
