Characteristics

Evergreen tree 5-16(-25) m. tall; bole irregular, fluted below; bark grey or grey-brown or grey-black, smooth, flaking; slash pink or yellow; branchlets densely setulose.. Leaves red when young, drying pale pinkish brown, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 4.8-14(-15.8) cm. long, 1.7-7 cm. wide, shortly but distinctly and acutely acuminate at the apex, obtuse to rounded at the base, slightly asymmetric, thinly coriaceous, sparsely strigulose on the midrib and lateral nerves beneath, practically glabrous elsewhere, lateral nerves in 5-7 pairs, slightly impressed above, very prominent beneath, the tertiary nerves subscalariform but not very conspicuous, venation laxly reticulate, visible but indistinct on both surfaces; petioles 5-9 mm. long.. Male flowers 1-3 together in the leaf-axils and axils of fallen leaves; pedicels 1-2 mm. long; calyx cyathiform, 2 mm. long, strigulose-tomentellous on both surfaces; calyx-lobes 4, triangular, 1 mm. long; corolla white, narrowly urceolate, 7-8 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, the tube thickened internally and with an extremely narrow entrance to the throat, densely strigulose tomentellous outside except at the base; corolla-lobes 4, 1 mm. long, thick and fleshy, strigulose outside; stamens ± 12, included, 5.5 mm. long; filaments 1.5 mm. long, inserted on the receptacle, setulose on upper half; anthers long-apiculate, glabrous.. Female flowers similar to the male but calyx 3 mm. long; corolla globose-urceolate, 5 mm. long and wide; staminodes ± 8, 3 mm. long, glabrous; ovary broadly ovoid, 2.5 mm. long and wide, with 8 or 10 shallow ridges, strigulose-tomentellous; locules 8 or 10, uniovulate; common style scarcely differentiated from the ovary; stigmata 4 or 5, fleshy and stigmatic on the inner face, 0.5 mm. long, strigulose outside.. Fruit yellowish white turning bright orange, cylindrical-subglobose (angular fide Beentje), 2.7 cm. long, 3 cm. wide, minutely verrucose, velvety sericeous-tomentellous, 8-10-grooved between the locules or sometimes 3-4-lobed when young, the calyx scarcely accrescent, with reflexed lobes.. Seeds 10 or fewer, blackish brown, 1.5 cm. long, 8 mm. wide, 6 mm. thick; endosperm ruminate.. Fig. 3/23; fig. 7.
