Characteristics

Shrub ± 1.5 m. tall, richly and rigidly branched; internodes very short.. Leaves deep greenish brown above when dry, paler beneath, oblong-elliptic or obovate-oblong, 1.7-6.3 cm. long, 1-2.7 cm. broad, rounded, retuse, obtuse or subacute at the apex, broadly rounded and slightly asymmetric at the base, undulate at the margin, shiny on both surfaces, glabrous beneath save for a few minute setulae on the margin, midrib and lateral nerves; lateral nerves in 4 pairs, the tertiary nerves and veins forming a dense reticulum on both surfaces; petiole 3-5 mm. long.. Male flowers unknown.. Female flowers solitary, pendulous, borne towards the base of the current year’ s shoot, in the axils of fallen reduced leaves and the first-formed foliage leaves; peduncle ± 1 mm. long; pedicel 2 mm. long, thickened, bracteoles ± 1.5 mm. long; calyx 4 mm. long, glabrous outside except for the setulose margin, 4-lobed almost to the base, the lobes ± round; corolla subrotate, 7 mm. long, glabrous; corolla-tube 1.5 mm. long; corolla-lobes 4, ovate-lingulate; staminodes 4, inserted on the tube and alternating with the lobes, 2 mm. long; ovary ovoid, 3 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, glabrous, with 8 uniovulate locules; styles 4, equalling the ovary, ascending, expanded and irregularly lobed distally, fleshy and stigmatic on the inner surface.. Fruit not known.
