Characteristics

Tree or shrub (3-)9-12 m. tall; bark on branchlets dark brown or black, smooth, sometimes mottled and flaking; slash pink on white.. Leaves drying pale or dark brown to black and mat above, paler beneath, lanceolate-elliptic, 1.5-12.5 cm. long, 1.3-5 cm. wide, acuminate or subacuminate at the apex, slightly asymmetric at the base, undulate at the margin, subcoriaceous, glabrous or with a few setulae towards base of the midrib beneath; midrib slightly prominent above, conspicuously so beneath; lateral nerves in 4-6 pairs, indistinct; venation scarcely visible; petiole ± 2 mm. long, setulose.. Male flowers subsessile, axillary and borne on branchlets or old wood, solitary or in 2-3(-9)-flowered fascicles; pedicels 0.5 mm. long, densely setulose.. Calyx cyathiform, lobed almost to the base, 1.5 mm. long, sparsely setulose outside, glabrous inside, ciliolate at the margin; lobes 3, ovate-triangular.. Corolla white, sweetly scented, narrowly ellipsoid, 7 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, glabrous; tube 5.5 mm. long; lobes 3, 1.5-2 mm. long and almost as wide, ascending; stamens 6-8, included, ± 4 mm. long; filaments 0.5-1 mm. long, inserted on the receptacle, densely setulose; anthers linear-lanceolate, 3.5 mm. long, markedly apiculate, glabrous; rudimentary ovary minute, glabrous.. Female flowers unknown.. Fruit yellow, subglobose, 2.8 cm. long, 1.8 cm. wide, apiculate, glabrous, the calyx 2.5 mm. long, with 3 triangular lobes, glabrous.. Seeds black, compressed-elliptic, 0.9-1.3 mm. long, 6.5-9 mm. wide, 4.5-6 mm. thick; endosperm ruminate.. Fig. 3/22.
