Evergreen tree or shrub 1.5-11 m. tall, with dense rounded crown; bole up to 60 cm. in diameter; bark grey, brown or almost black, rough, with fine to deep quadrangular fissures; slash soft, cream tinged pink.. Young branchlets densely setulose.. Leaves olive green, drying brown or pale greenish brown, broadly elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, 0.7-3.7 cm. long, 0.4-1.7 cm. wide, acute to rounded at apex and base, densely setulose on midrib and margin beneath, less so on blade; other venation virtually invisible on both surfaces.. Male flowers subfasciculate in 2-6-flowered cymules in leaf-axils and on leafless branchlets; peduncle ± 1 mm. long; pedicels slender, 1-2 mm. long; calyx cyathiform, 2-3 mm. long, lobed to ± the middle, strigulose on both surfaces; calyx-lobes 3(-4), triangular; corolla pale yellow, conical in bud, 6 mm. long, glabrous but with scattered papillae; corolla-tube 3 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide; corolla-lobes 3, ovate-triangular, 3 mm. long, acute; stamens ± 12, sometimes in pairs, up to 1.25 mm. long, included; filaments 1.25 mm. long, glabrous, inserted on base of the corolla-tube; anthers glabrous save for a few minute apical setulae; rudimentary ovary narrowly and irregularly conical, 3 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, glabrous.. Female flowers solitary in leaf-axils and below the leaves on the bare branchlets; pedicels 1-2 mm. long; calyx and corollas as in the male but latter strigulose with a few minute hairs; staminodes not seen; ovary ellipsoid, 3 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, glabrous; locules 6, uniovulate; styles 3, bilobed, 1 mm. long, glabrous, fleshy and stigmatic on inner face.. Fruit green to yellow at first, turning red and finally black, glossy, ellipsoid-subglobose to ovoid, 1-1.7 cm. long, 0.8-1.2 cm. wide, glabrous, with calyx slightly accrescent, patelliform with rounded apiculate lobes.. Seed 1, dark brown, ellipsoid, 1.2 cm. long, 8 mm. wide, 6 mm. thick, with deeply ruminate endosperm.. Fig. 2/6.
