Characteristics

Climber; stems herbaceous, glabrous, becoming white-punctate on the ridges when older.. Leaf-blade glabrous, punctate, 46–97 mm. long, 62–120 mm. broad, very deeply palmately 3-lobed with the two lateral lobes themselves deeply 2-lobed almost to the base; lobes acute to rounded and apiculate with the central lobe longest, broadly ovate, rhombic or elliptic in outline, and the lateral lobes slightly shorter than or almost equalling the central, asymmetrically ovate in outline; all 5 lobes deeply pinnately lobulate, giving a much-dissected appearance to the blade; petiole with a few obscure forward-pointing aculeate hairs, 13–43 mm. long.. Probracts spathulate, hooded with incurved margins, 1–3 mm. long.. Male flowers 5–14 in shortly racemiform fascicles coaxillary with 0–4 ♀ flowers; pedicels capillary, 11–35 mm. long; receptacle-tube 1.5–2.5 mm. long; lobes filiform, 1–1.5 mm. long; corolla pale yellow, with lobes 6–7 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. broad, united below.. Female flowers 1–4, subsessile, intermixed with 0–13 ♂ flowers; ovary ± 4 mm. long and 1.5 mm. across; receptacle-tube ± 1 mm. long.. Fruit subsessile, red with longitudinal rows of white spots, ellipsoid and slightly beaked, ± 27 mm. long and 19 mm. across.. Seeds 5.5 × 3 × 3.5 mm.
