Characteristics

Rampant climber forming large masses on shrubs at forest edges and in undergrowth; stems herbaceous, glabrous.. Leaf-blade ovate-cordate in outline, glabrous, punctate, gland-dotted just above the base, 71–125 mm. long, 74–122 mm. broad, palmately 5-lobed; lobes triangular-ovate, broadest or only very slightly narrowed at the base, somewhat sinuate and apiculate-toothed, acuminate, acute and apiculate; petiole 30–84 mm. long.. Pro-bracts spathulate, hooded with incurved margins, ± 4 mm. long.. Male flowers in dense shortly racemiform 9–16-flowered fascicles, without ♀ flowers intermixed; pedicels 17–30 mm. long; receptacle-tube with 3 shallow longitudinal grooves and with 3 internal V-shaped thickenings, 3–5 mm. long; lobes subulate-lanceolate, 1.5–5.5 mm. long; corolla urceolate, pale lemon-yellow, with lobes 13–16 mm. long, 7.5–10.5 mm. broad, united below.. Female flowers in separate 3–5-flowered fascicles; pedicels 2–3 mm. long; ovary ovoid-rostrate, green with longitudinal lines of white markings, 6.5–9 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. across; receptacle-tube with 3 broad shallow longitudinal grooves, 1.5–2 mm. long; lobes subulate, ± 1.5 mm. long; corolla-lobes 8–10 mm. long, 4.5–5.5 mm. broad, united below.. Fruits solitary or in clusters of 2–5 on 2–5 mm. long stalks, red with 7–9 longitudinal lines of white spots, also with other scattered white spots between the lines, broadly ovoid or obpyriform, beaked, 26–30 mm. long, ± 18–22 mm. across.. Seeds 6.5–7 × 3–3.5 × 4–4.5 mm.
