Characteristics

Plant leafless. Basal bracts overlapping, greenish to yellowish, blunt to pointed. Flower stem 0.4–1.  tall, greenish yellow, 3–25-flowered. Ovaries straight, white to yellowish, smooth or warty, unspotted. Flowers uncrowded, 40–50 mm across, white with scattered small red or purple spots and purple labellum. Sepals and petals remaining flat, shallowly recurved or recurved in distal half. Dorsal sepal 20–30 × 3–6 mm. Lateral sepals 25–35 × 4–6 mm. Petals 18–23 × 4–5 mm. Labellum 15–20 × 5–7 mm, mauve with darker purple markings; lateral lobes 3–3.5 × 1 mm, glabrous; midlobe 6–7 × 4 mm, purple with dense apical patch of white or mauve, orange-tipped hairs. Callus ridges 3–3.5 × 0.5 mm, divergent, hairy. Column 8–9 × 3 mm, white. Capsules pale yellow.

Widespread and sometimes common; growing mainly among grass in open forest and woodland and on rock outcrops, usually in areas with a sparse understorey; less commonly along stream banks, seasonally wet flats and in margins and inside monsoonal thickets. Often found along road margins.
