Sterile stems short, with several overlapping basal sheaths, 1–2-leaved at the apex; leaves narrowly lanceolate or oblance-olate, over 7 cm. long, up to 8 mm. broad.. Flowering stems slender, covered by the overlapping leaves; leaves 10–12, the lowermost short and sheathlike, the remainder erect, adpressed to and sheathing the stem but with the apices often somewhat recurved, lanceolate, acute or acuminate, the largest 3.5–5.5 cm. long, nearly 1 cm. broad, lower ones marked or spotted red..
