Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae > Disa

Characteristics

Plants erect, 200-500 mm tall; basal sheaths several, hyaline; leaves lax, narrowly lanceolate to linear, lower leaves often clustered basally, erect to falcate, conduplicate, up to 200 mm long, upper leaves completely sheathing, grading into the floral bracts. Inflorescences densely compact, 15-numerous-flowered, usually appearing globose; bracts green, usually as long as the ovaries. Flowers white to deep pink with purple spots near the sepal apices. Median sepal deeply galeate, apiculate, margins incurved, constricted near the middle, 5-8 x 3-4 x 4-5 mm deep; spur slender, acute, horizontal basally, occasionally at length decurved, 3-6 mm long; lateral sepals patent, broadly oblong, obtuse to rounded, 5-7 mm long, apiculi well-developed. Petals oblong, trunculate, oblique, with a large anticous basal lobe, c. 4 mm long, apex twisted to obscure the galea entrance. Lip lorate, often somewhat widened apically, 4-5 mm long. Anther horizontal to somewhat pendent; stigma equally tripulvinate; lateral rostellum lobes square, central lobe much smaller.
